Terrain gradient illustration

Convert elevation change and horizontal distance into a geometric gradient.

How it is calculated

Gradient % = elevation change ÷ horizontal distance × 100. Angle = arctan(rise ÷ run). Sloping distance = square root(rise² + run²).

Assumptions & limits

Represents a uniform straight slope. An average hides steep sections and obstacles. It is not a trail suitability, slope stability or construction assessment. Defaults are illustrative planning inputs, not recommended minimums or a guarantee of safety.
